TY Buratai Literary Initiative Expands Literacy Outreach in Kaduna Schools
The TY Buratai Literary Initiative (TYBLI), founded by former Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. Tukur Yusuf Buratai (Rtd), has continued its 2025 campaign to promote literacy among Nigerian youth with book donations to two schools in Kaduna State.
On May 12, 2025, TYBLI donated 40 assorted books to Girau International School in Kaduna as part of its Book Placement Project. Dr. Liz Ben-Iheanacho, Chairperson of TYBLI, emphasized the organization’s commitment to fostering a reading culture and nurturing literary talent among students.
She stated, “We are making an impact, one reader at a time, transforming literary fortunes. With clarity and focus, we will continue to work towards a more literate Nigeria as the vehicle for social transformation.”
Rear Admiral Abdul Adamu Biu (Rtd), Director of Girau International School, expressed gratitude for the donation, highlighting its alignment with the school’s blended Nigerian and British curriculum.
He announced the introduction of two new literary awards: “The Most Number of Books Read” and “Best Review,” to encourage reading and critical analysis among students.
In a symbolic return to his roots, Lt. Gen. Buratai also facilitated a book donation to his alma mater, Ungwar Sarki Basic School (formerly Unguwar Sarki Musulmi LEA Primary School), where he began his education in 1967.
This gesture underscores TYBLI’s mission to enhance literacy across Nigeria, particularly in underserved communities.
These initiatives are part of TYBLI’s broader 2025 agenda, which includes distributing book boxes to five schools nationwide and expanding literary awards to recognize young writers.
The organization aims to cultivate a generation of well-read, critically thinking youth through strategic book placements and literary competitions.
The initiative, which covered three schools in 2024, is scheduled to extend the book placement project to five schools this year.
